On the edge of the Triglav National Park lies an enchanting alpine lake Bled with a little island in the middle of it. The oldest castle in Slovenia rises on a large rock cliff above the lake and offers one of the most sensational views.
Lake Bled is without a doubt one of the most famous tourist destinations in Slovenia. Located just 35 km from Ljubljana’s airport or 55 km from the capital, it’s easily accessible.
Lake Bled has a length of 2.120 metres and a width of 1.380 metres. Maximum depth is 30 meters. It can get as warm as 26 degrees during the hot summer months and offers numerous outdoor activities. You can plunge into the lake from one of the lake’s outdoor bathing areas. You may stand-up paddle around the lake and take a quick break on Slovenia’s only natural island. Take a ride on a traditional pletna boat built by locals. Their history begins in 1590. The 7 metres long boat provides 18 people with a safe means of transportation. By standing and using two oars, the oarsman uses a unique technique to drive the boat. You may take in the reflections of the nearby hills, buildings, and forests on the motionless water.

Lake Bled is accessible all year long. Even though the lake and surroundings look beautiful when covered in recently fallen snow, there are definitely more things to do in the summer. But in the end, it depends on what suits you the most. Summer months can be overcrowded, particularly on weekends. So, the ideal time is probably in the late spring or early autumn.
What to do around lake Bled?
The short but steep climb to Mount Ojstrica (20 minutes) will reward you with a spectacular view of the lake. But be aware that if you want to relax and pose on a romantic bench with a stunning view, you may have to wait your turn.
Take a trip through the scenic Vintgar Gorge, which is only 4 kilometers from the lake. It’s a 1.6-kilometer one-way hike through a 250-meter-deep valley filled with rapids and small waterfalls.
When you walk around the town of Bled, treat yourself to a wonderful, original Bled cream cake. It’s a layer of vanilla and whipped cream sandwiched between two crispy crusts, topped with icing sugar.

Visiting Bled with your dog?
Your dog is welcome to accompany you to Bled. There are numerous walking roads and hiking trails, and you can even explore areas outside of the castle. Dogs are also accepted on the island; you can either SUP there together or take a pletna boat there. Dogs are permitted to swim in the lake, but outside the official swimming areas.
