In the southeast of Slovenia, below Gorjanci, sits the delightful tiny town of Kostanjevica na Krki. It is also known as the Venice of Dolenjska and is the only town on an island in Slovenia. The island was artificially made on the Krka river meander that now gently flows around the historic town. Surrounded by green hills it’s a perfect starting point for many walks. In the summer, swimming and stand-up paddling are great activities on the tranquil Krka river.
Where is Kostanjevica na Krki?
Kostanjevica na Krki is also one of the oldest towns in Slovenia. There are two bridges on each side of the town. The third bridge, which was only intended for pedestrians, was created by renowned architect Jože Plečnik and was most recently swept away by flooding. The town itself is small, you can easily walk around it. Stop on the bridge to take in the stunning sight of the river’s green surface as it flows beneath you. Find a spot by the green river and just enjoy the view. In the summer, the river can reach a temperature of 25 degrees, so jump in. Get on a boat or a SUP and paddle around the island to get a new perspective of the town.
